Shy to Tell the Truth

The average person tells two or three lies in ten minutes. Why do people lie? Maybe to get out of things. Or because they are too shy to tell their own parents and admit they did something bad. "The Lie” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. tells the story of young boy named Eli. Eli got himself caught up in a lie but he is to afraid to tell the truth. He failed entry exams to Whitehill. He is afraid to tell his parents the truth because he would be the only Remenzel never to get into Whitehill. His parents, on the other hand, are preparing him to go but they don't know he did not make it. Even though we lie so many times in our life we always will try to be honest.
To begin with, let us speak about the symbolism in this story that contributes to the cloud of lying. Lilies appear at the end when Eli decided to go hide outside and he sits by these flowers. The lilies symbolize the mode of irony. It was also a gloomy day and usually people are crabby on gray days like the ones in the book. Gray usually means people are tired and not as aware of each other; when it is bright out they’re more aware. Death is a major symbolism of irony and symbolized in this story with the Remenzels' family chain ending when Eli is refused to Whitehill.
Furthermore let’s talk about the mode and how it started. The mode in this story is irony. This lie begins with Eli ripping up his grade he got on the entry exam he does not want to tell his parents he didn't not get in. Sanity vs. Insanity begins when the parents act like he got in automatically just because he is a Remenzel and they fund the school. So they think the school should let him in Eli in right away. At the end it is lost of sanity when the chain is broken by Eli.
Furthermore let us talk about the main characters. Eli is a young shy boy who really does not to go Whitehill because he failed the entry exams. Sylvia is Eli's mother who is determined to get Eli into Whitehill. But also wants Eli to get special privileges but the dad tells Sylvia no special privileges.. But then Dr. Remenzel goes off and asks for a special request to let Eli in. But they all said no to Dr. Remenzel. . But then Dr. Remenzel goes and asks for a special privilege which is called hypocrisy.
Now which one would you want, to tell a lie or be honest? If I were you I would choose to be honest cause when you are not honest it comes back to bite you in the butt. Then everyone gets mad at you. Because you usually ruined their day by something you did. So be honest; don't lie about anything.
